Ho Chi Minh Trail motorbike tours: The Ho Chi Minh Trail is a strategic military transportation network that has moved from northern Vietnam to central Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia to reach the south of Vietnam. This system provided food, weapons...to the South Vietnam Liberation Army and People's Army of Vietnam during the 16 years (1959-1975) of the Vietnam War.
In Vietnam, the Ho Chi Minh Trail is called the Truong Son Road, following the name of the Truong Son mountain range in central Vietnam where the trail has crossed.
During the Vietnam War, US Army and forces of South Vietnamese pro-United States of America bombed violently this transport system with infantry and air operations. An electronic machinery system called the McNamara Electronic Barrier was used. In addition, Agent Orange and other herbicides were sprayed on many forested areas of the trail to remove the leaves. Chemical rain to produce mud has also been used by US armies to break the road. According to the US National Security Agency, the Ho Chi Minh Trail is considered "one of the greatest military achievements in the 20th century."
Today, many parts of the western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos have been abandoned, except for a few historic sites. In 2000, a road was built on the Ho Chi Minh Trail, in the eastern branch, to follow Vietnam.
Some parts of the Ho Chi Minh Trail have existed for centuries for commercial traffic in the area. The trail crosses one of the most difficult terrains in Southeast Asia: high mountains, sparsely populated, tropical forests...During the first years of the Indochina war, the Viet Minh used the trail as the link between North and South to avoid attacks by the French army.
After the creation, the Vietnamese Republican Government (Government of Southern Vietnam), under the support of the United States, refused the national general elections decided the Geneva Agreement on Vietnam in 1954. This refusal led to the division of Vietnam. In order to support Southern Communists, the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam (Northern Government) has decided to build strategic roads. In 1959, when the military conflicts have exploded between the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam and the Southern Government, the Northern Government sent the new 559 Troop to set up the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
Until reunification in 1975, the Ho Chi Minh Trail existed for almost 6,000 days. The artillery forces, the engineer forces, the young volunteers, the people...have created a solid and continuous road network of 18,710 km km, 1,400 km of pipelines...to transport 1.3 million goods (weapons, food ...), 2 million people to the fronts in southern Vietnam.
From 1965 to 1972, the United States mobilized about 152,000 airstrikes with thousands of planes to drop nearly 4 million tons of bombs on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. More than 20,000 soldiers, young volunteers, workers sacrificed themselves; more than 30,000 were injured; about 14,500 vehicles - machines of all kinds were damaged; more than 700 artillery gun guns were damaged; more than 90,000 tons of goods were burned...
On the American side, a thousand aircrafts were shot down; thousands of commandos were shot or captured. US troops spent billions of dollars to cut the road but everything was missed. For Vietnam's history, the Ho Chi Minh Trail is a real legend.
